Bulls cruise to 40-7 win
Zephyrhills was flying high following a 5-0 start of the 2021 season. The Bulldogs came crashing down hard Friday night losing 40-7 to Wiregrass Ranch at home.
Zephyrhills has been touted as the top team in Pasco County, but the Bulls showed they owned the top spot as the combination of Rocco Becht and Bryson Rodgers proved to be more than the otherwise sting Bulldog defense could handle.
The loss comes before a critical four-game stretch for the Bulldogs featuring critical district games against Cypress Creek, Nature Coast and Hudson. The season finale will be the Nine-Mile War against rival Pasco.
Zephyrhills senior running back Jaylin Thomas had over 130 yards rushing, but couldn’t get to the end zone.
Thomas felt the loss is an eye-opener the Bulldogs needed.
“This is a wakeup-call,” Thomas said. “Some of the people on this team thought we were perfect. It shows we need to go after it and practice during the week and fix the things that were mistakes”
Sometimes a loss could have a negative effect on the remainder of the season. Some players will need to put it behind them.
“Every Monday, win or lose, we watch the film and go over our mistakes,” Thomas said. “After that, we’re going to flush it and move on. We have to fix those mistakes. We have to fix it all.”
Thomas said the loss to Wiregrass will be enough fuel for him and his teammates to go out and run the table to close out the season.
“The next four competitors are done. It’s like a torch,” Thomas explained. “It’s going to be hotter and hotter every game and every play. We are going to show them we are not weak. This is just a stop we have to step over.”
