The tournament action during the holiday break for the Zephyrhills Girls’ and Boys’ basketball teams saw plenty of success against top caliber teams.
The Lady Bulldogs brought some hardware back to ZHS claiming a first place finish in the highly competitive Tampa Bay Christmas Invitational.
Maya Llanes, the tournament MVP, had 18 points, 11 steals and six rebounds as the Bulldogs took down Alonso 36-31 in the championship final. Timneta Clemons added eight point and seven rebounds and Mikayla Cintron canned six points and brought down 14 rebounds.
Llanes moved closer to the century mark in scoring. She currently has 965 career points.
The boys’ squad took a runner-up finish in the Nature Coast Christmas Tournament. Zephyrhills took a 61-43 win over host Nature Coast and and 87-41 win over Jefferson to reach the final. The Bulldogs fell to Brecksville, Ohio in the tournament final 73-51.
Bulldog seniors Jimmy McCauley and Kevin Pagan were named to the All Tournament team.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 12-2 this season and the Boys’ squad is 9-1 entering the first week of January.
