Bulldogs grapple their way to fifth-place finish

Zephyrhills took three victories in five matches to come away with a fifth-place finish in the Bulldog Invitation Dual Meet Tournament Saturday.

Zephyrhills took a 48-25 win over Bradenton Christian in the fifth-place match. Palm Bay won the tournament title followed by Tenoroc, Wesley Chapel and Bayside.

Finishing seventh was Cypress Creek, Boca Ciega, eighth, Pasco, ninth and Bell Creek, 10th.

The Bulldogs went 3-2 defeating Bell Creek 48-26 and Boca Ciega 48-32 along with the win over Bradenton Christian. Zephyrhills lost to Tenoroc 47-36 and lost on criteria in a 36-36 draw with Bayside.

“We’re a very young team, after nine seniors graduated last season and winning district,” said Zephyrhills coach Mike Martinez. “I have a team full of sophomores and freshman and this group is out there competing with some tough teams helping us finish higher than some of the more experienced teams.

“They’re making small gains and improving everyday. I’m proud of the work their doing and you will see us wrestling for another district title soon.”
