Bulldogs’ Neal signs with UNC-Charlotte

Senior Maguire Neal will run track and play football for the 49ers

Zephyrhills High School football and track standout Maguire Neal made it official today signing a National Letter of Intent to compete for the 49ers at the University of North Carolina Charlotte.

Neal, a force the Bulldogs defense in this year’s 9-2 season, was the team’s sack leader with 5.5 as part of his 13 tackles for a loss. On offense, he had nine receptions for 169 yards and three touchdowns.

“I’m excited to play college football,” Neal said after putting his name on the dotted line. I picked a program that’s on the way up. I picked the right home and I can’t wait to see what happens.

The 6’1″, 190-pound senior excels on the track as well claiming four district titles and two regional crowns last season. The speedster’s specialty was the 110 and 300 hurdles. He competed at the FHSAA Track and Field Championships in the 100 meters, both hurdle events and on the Bulldogs’ 4×100 relay team. He was sixth in the 300 hurdles and the relay finished seventh.

Neal will be competing on the gridiron and on the track for the 49ers.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” said Bulldog football coach Nick Carroll. “I look forward to what’s next for him. All the blood, sweat and tears, the butt chewings and all the work in the weight room came to this point where we can celebrate him.”

Neal had quite the audience for his big moment with more than a dozen of teammates, his family and coaches on hand.

“It’s great to look out there and see my teammates supporting me today,” Neal said. “I’ll always have their back no matter what. And it’s great to share this with may family. They have supported me throughout this journey.”
