Wooten Pitches A Gem

ZHS softball rolls over Hudson 11-0

Sophomore Alex Bowe-Wooten tossed a one-hit shutout and the Lady Bulldogs’ offense was on fire as Zephyrhills rolled over Hudson 11-0 in a game shortened by the 10-run mercy rule Thursday night.

Wooten registered seven strikeouts in five innings of work in her best pitching performance of the season. The defense played error-free behind Wooten.

On the offensive side, Zephyrhills Giselle Navarra went two-for-two scoring a pair of runs. Joining the scoring parade were Emma-Lei Buchanon, Aleah Killebrew, Brooke Lea and Bella Mathis, who each scored two runs.

It appears the Lady Bulldogs are at a turning point in the season with six games remaining. This week, a team meeting could be the jumpstart Zephyrhills needed for the stretch run before the district tournament.

“We had a talk yesterday,” said coach Kristen Dumont, “We asked them how bad do they want it. We had a long talk and it looks like it worked. They played well tonight and Alex pitched a great game.

“They looked like they wanted to be here tonight. They were ready to play.”

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and added four more for an 8-0 advantage. A pair of runs in the third and another in the fourth was all they needed to send the Cobras packing.

“When we actually play as a team, we play hard and we don’t give up,” said Killebrew, a Florida Memorial signee. “We had a lot of fun out there.
