There are a group of girls who are making history at Zephyrhills High School as the first members of the Lady Bulldogs Flag Football team.
The Florida High School Athletic Association approved Girls’ Flag Football as an official varsity sport. In their inaugural season, coach Nick Carroll’s ZHS squad are making strides in improvement that aren’t quite seen in the win column.
Despite what the scoreboard says, Carroll is pleased with what he sees on the field.
“They are all eager to learn and it’s a learning curve,” Carroll said. “None of these girls have played football like this. I told the girls this is going to be special. We have improved a lot and in this inaugural season, they will leave a legacy.”
Carroll’s squad celebrated senior night on Tom Fisher Field Wednesday, but ended the night with a heartbreaking 6-0 loss to Cypress Creek. The Coyotes scored in the final two minutes to claim the win.
“That’s football,” Carroll said. “We’ll get there.”
