Senior Jade King scored 18 points pacing Zephyrhills to 55-29 win over Cypress Creek at Alan Reed Court at Zephyrhills High School.
King scored 11 of her 18 points in the second half to help the Lady Bulldogs pull away from the Coyotes and secure a key district win. Zephyrhills improved to 9-4 on the season and riding a six-game winning streak.
“We only worry about the next game,” said Zephyrhills coach Antwon Gildon. “We worry about our next opponent and we play again tomorrow. We’ll worry about the streaks at the end of the season.”
The Lady Bulldogs’ defense set the tone only allowing 11 first-half points.
“Defense wins,” Gildon said. “We learned that playing in an event over the holiday break really brought us together as a unit. I think the players and staff are starting to discover who we really are. We are creating an identity that we didn’t have prior to all this. They are starting to feed in to what we’re selling and we’re supporting what they’re doing.”
Last season ZHS coach Kim Miller-McCullough remembers Cypress Creek handing Zephyrhills a 41-36 loss.
“I told the girls in the lockerroom that last season this team punched us in the mouth,” McCullough said. “This win feels good.”
The Lady Bulldogs hit the road for four straight away games including three district matchups.
