A violent collision on County Road 54 east of Lumberton Road left one driver dead and another seriously injured Tuesday, according to authorities.
Investigators say Vehicle 1, a Kia Soul, was traveling eastbound on CR-54 when, for reasons still under investigation, it crossed into the westbound lane. The Kia entered the direct path of Vehicle 2, a westbound Hyundai Sonata, resulting in a near head-on impact.
The force of the crash sent debris flying into the path of Vehicle 3, a Hyundai Veloster traveling behind the Sonata. The debris struck the Veloster, but its driver was unharmed.
Drivers of both the Kia Soul and Hyundai Sonata suffered serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Despite emergency medical efforts, the driver of the Kia later died from injuries sustained during the collision. The driver of the Sonata remains hospitalized.
Authorities closed the roadway for several hours as crash reconstruction teams examined the scene.
The incident remains under investigation. Officials have not yet released the identities of those involved.
