An 86-year-old Zephyrhills man was killed Monday evening when he was struck by a northbound vehicle while attempting to cross US-301 north of Pretty Pond Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred just after 6 p.m. on November 24. Troopers say the elderly pedestrian stepped into the path of a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 60-year-old Zephyrhills woman who was traveling north on the highway. Despite efforts by emergency responders, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision.
The driver of the pickup remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Authorities have not released the names of those involved, citing Marsy’s Law and ongoing notification of next of kin.
The stretch of US-301 near Pretty Pond Road is a heavily traveled corridor. FHP continues to investigate the incident. Charges are not expected at this time.
The death marks another somber reminder of the dangers pedestrians face on Pasco County’s busy thoroughfares especially US 301.
